Everybody has special memories, I know I have
many but most of my memories are from past holidays. Holidays are a special
time, and one of the best parts about them is the food we get to eat on these
days. Every holiday since I can remember my family goes all out with cooking. We
eat a variety of things, everything always is delicious. I would have to say one
of my favorite holidays is Christmas just because all of the food there is to
enjoy.
Every Christmas morning I wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee, the aroma filling the air as my mother is getting ready to make a delicious feast for breakfast. I watch her as she prepares everything, as she throws the cinnamon buns in the oven; she’s preparing the home fries with tons of seasoning and getting ready to start the French toast. Next she starts to fry the bacon and sausage, along with the toast and fries. Than as soon as everything is almost done she throws on the eggs. I find it amazing how every time she cooks, all the food is ready around the same time. Not only does the food come out at the same time it’s also delicious.
The best Christmas I have ever had would have to be four years ago. I got to eat dinner several places so I got to taste a little bit of everything. First I went to my uncles’ house, he’s on the Portuguese side of my family so everything was kicked up with flavor, hot and spicy just the way I like it. He always made the best Portuguese stuffing, made with chourico, onions, peppers, Portuguese bread, and lots of spices. The way he bakes his turkey is the best, when you take a bite your mouth waters from all the juices in every slice. I got so filled up there just because everything was amazing, by the time I was done eating I wasn’t sure I could move, but I still had two more places to go. Around four o’clock I went to my boyfriends’ mothers’ house she’s French so the table was completely different. This time there was ham along with the turkey and she made something I had never tried before, it was called French meat stuffing and it was a stuffing with little to no bread, I’m not sure, it had several types of ground meat in it I’m guessing beef and pork with minced onions and it was full of flavor. It was a complete opposite of what I’m use to like the Portuguese stuffing but it just as delicious. By now I felt as if I were about to pop, but it didn’t even matter because everything I had eaten so far was definitely worth it. I was glad also that I got to go and try something different, it’s always good to try new things you never know if you like something until you try it so I like to try anything new when I have the chance to.
The night was almost over but not quite yet, I still had to go back to my mothers house for dessert, what I say is the best part of the night. As soon as I arrive through the door I can already see the table filled with yummy sweets. She had: chocolate crème pie, apple pie, coconut custard pie and chocolate truffles. I was still full from my double dinner but I still had to have a sliver of each, just to taste. “I can afford the calories” I said to myself as I ate the last bite of chocolate crème pie. It was the best dessert ever I wish I had just saved more room so I could have more of each, sweets are my weakness so its hard to walk away after such a small amount.
Sadly the night had to end but on a better note the day was awesome. I got to spend my day with people I love and amazing food to go with it. One day four years, the day came and gone, but the memories that went with it will last with me forever. It’s funny how something as simple as food can create a memory in your heart. I can’t wait for more days to come and many memories to follow.
