Ordering the vegetarian meal? There’s more animal blood on your hands

This article was about how being a vegiterian isnt really saving any lives. you may think because you dont eat meat thats once less animal getting killed but thats not true at all to harvest we need all these pesticides and poisens to keep animals away so for ever piece of grain something must die whether it be in insect or a mouse. "Each area of grain production in Australia has a mouse plague on average every four years, with 500-1000 mice per hectare. Poisoning kills at least 80% of the mice." so the more grain you eat the more mice you may end up be killing in the end.

memoir

Everybody has special memories, I know I have many but most of my memories are from past holidays. Holidays are a special time, and one of the best parts about them is the food we get to eat on these days. Every holiday since I can remember my family goes all out with cooking. We eat a variety of things, everything always is delicious. I would have to say one of my favorite holidays is Christmas just because all of the food there is to enjoy.

Every Christmas morning I wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee, the aroma filling the air as my mother is getting ready to make a delicious feast for breakfast. I watch her as she prepares everything, as she throws the cinnamon buns in the oven; she’s preparing the home fries with tons of seasoning and getting ready to start the French toast. Next she starts to fry the bacon and sausage, along with the toast and fries. Than as soon as everything is almost done she throws on the eggs. I find it amazing how every time she cooks, all the food is ready around the same time. Not only does the food come out at the same time it’s also delicious.

The best Christmas I have ever had would have to be four years ago. I got to eat dinner several places so I got to taste a little bit of everything. First I went to my uncles’ house, he’s on the Portuguese side of my family so everything was kicked up with flavor, hot and spicy just the way I like it. He always made the best Portuguese stuffing, made with chourico, onions, peppers, Portuguese bread, and lots of spices. The way he bakes his turkey is the best, when you take a bite your mouth waters from all the juices in every slice. I got so filled up there just because everything was amazing, by the time I was done eating I wasn’t sure I could move, but I still had two more places to go. Around four o’clock I went to my boyfriends’ mothers’ house she’s French so the table was completely different. This time there was ham along with the turkey and she made something I had never tried before, it was called French meat stuffing and it was a stuffing with little to no bread, I’m not sure, it had several types of ground meat in it I’m guessing beef and pork with minced onions and it was full of flavor. It was a complete opposite of what I’m use to like the Portuguese stuffing but it just as delicious. By now I felt as if I were about to pop, but it didn’t even matter because everything I had eaten so far was definitely worth it. I was glad also that I got to go and try something different, it’s always good to try new things you never know if you like something until you try it so I like to try anything new when I have the chance to.

The night was almost over but not quite yet, I still had to go back to my mothers house for dessert, what I say is the best part of the night. As soon as I arrive through the door I can already see the table filled with yummy sweets. She had: chocolate crème pie, apple pie, coconut custard pie and chocolate truffles. I was still full from my double dinner but I still had to have a sliver of each, just to taste. “I can afford the calories” I said to myself as I ate the last bite of chocolate crème pie. It was the best dessert ever I wish I had just saved more room so I could have more of each, sweets are my weakness so its hard to walk away after such a small amount.

Sadly the night had to end but on a better note the day was awesome. I got to spend my day with people I love and amazing food to go with it. One day four years, the day came and gone, but the memories that went with it will last with me forever. It’s funny how something as simple as food can create a memory in your heart. I can’t wait for more days to come and many memories to follow.

Rules to eat by

This article is about how food has changed so much over the years. We rely on the nutritional information stamped on the back of our food but is that really telling us much. We have learned more from ourselves in the past. Back in the day when we didn’t have this information on the back of our food we had to look somewhere else and that’s when culture came into place. All this information has come from somewhere most of it has been passed down. Food now isn’t the healthiest it has ever been in the article it talks about how on fruit loops theirs a smart choices check mark on the box never before would someone consider that has a healthy choice. Its also talks about the sugar substitute Splenda, it that really food? It’s made up of chemicals and fiber should we even trust it. The point is food has changed so much over the past. Is it worth it?

The Vegetable-Industrial Complex

This article was about E Coli and the differences between getting your vegetables at an industrialized farm versus your local farm. No matter where you get your food there is always the possibility of bacteria. Nothing is as clean as it should be, cross contamination can be really bad and that’s what happens when food is prepared together. Like the article said “The plant in question washes 26 million servings of salad every week. In effect, we’re washing the whole nation’s salad in one big sink.” Because of this if you were to have one thing of spinach and it had E Coli on it by washing it with more it is being spread through everything so it is very easy to spread bacteria in farms. There is an estimated five thousand deaths a year due to the food supply. All this shows you can’t always believe because you’re buying your food in a market it’s safe. I don’t think that different types of food should be processed in the same factories it could save a lot of people if everything was done separately and to the safest precautions.

feeling toward memoir

I wasnt too sure at first about the memoir, but after these exercises and now that i know what im going to write about im alot more confident. I started out pretty shakey, unsure how to incorporate food with a detailed personal experience but as I look over it more im actually getting excited to get to write about this topic. this is alot of information I can get out about food.

Rhetorical Analysis

This ad from Tyson like many other ads encourages moms to buy their food by saying their kids will thank them, but should kids really thank their parents for buying these products?  You may think this food is delicious and great for kids but do you know what goes on before you actually eat this food, like where at all came from? These big market food companies may not be as great as you think. Tyson like other major chicken farms raise their chicken in a broiler farm which is pitch black windowless sheds holding usually about twenty-four hundred chickens which barely get any room to move due to limited floor space. The chickens are bred to grow bigger breast muscles because that’s where the best meat comes from, so because of this most of the chicken legs grow weak and break forcing them  to stay in one place until their all ready to leave . The fecal waste on the floor, which is only scheduled to be cleaned out every eighteen months may cause some chickens to develop inflamed patches of skin. UHG! I understand the place isn’t going to be that clean but can you imagine what a chicken coop filled with twenty-four hundred chickens would look like after not being cleaned for eighteen months I know I wouldn’t. These are just some of the things that go on in these types of broiler farms.

killing chickens

This excerpt “Killing Chickens” is about the author Meredith Hall who after facing the decision to divorce her husband has to take over his job at the farm while she stays a loving mother. The author uses great detail when talking about how she had to kill the chickens like how they would fight for their lives. She told how one of the chickens was her children’s favorite because it would let them hold it, and how another one was her favorite because she had to take special care of it as a baby, but she still had to kill them. I found this story disturbing at times and I felt bad for the author because it’s not what she wanted to do, it’s what she needed to do to provide for herself and children. Even though i've never had to kill chickens i can still relate to this story, she is sad but she will pull through.

Thinking made visable

My hometown was a wonderful (or choose your own adjective) place to grow up.
My hometown was in a quiet mountain top, surrounding me was nothing but shades of green from tree tops, and all i needed was nothing.

Laci had a rather eccentric style.
Laci wore mismatched clothing with crazy handmade jewlery, she had long frizzy hair and a voice that peirced through your ears..

Mr. Brown is the worst teacher I’ve ever had.
Mr. Brown is a stern uneasy to talk to teacher, he sits in class all day and preaches, will i ever learn anything here!

The room seemed very institutional
The room was very dull, as i walked in a chill ran down my spine i didnt feel comfortable, i had to leave.

choosing a theme

My biggest interest in writing this semester would have to be on health and medicine I would really like to look into, and learn more about the natural remedies and medicines for relieving pain and curing sickness. I don’t believe in taking narcotics unless it’s a dyer emergency, so learning and getting to write and discuss about finding better ways to help someone get better without prescription drugs sounds like a great broad topic to write about the semester.
I would also be interested in writing about food. There is alot of information you can find on food in many differant areas such as The fast food industry, and other cultural foods and traditions. The whole food market has a broad selection of information to research, so it would be interesting to get to learn and write about the part of food most people dont think about.

"forget about recess"

This article was about a new recess program they have started. Its basicallly a program too keep children out of trouble at recess while learning social and physical skills. I'm not sure i agree with program completely but I can see why they started it. Instead of making every child participate they should give it as an option, not every child wants to go to  gym class twice.

Writers Autobiography

I haven’t written as much as I should lately but when I do write I usually enjoy it, it’s a great way to express yourself. While writing I like to be focused on a topic that I highly relate to, something that I can keep on writing about versus something I have to stop and keep thinking about. It’s frustrating to write about a topic you know little on and if doesn’t interest you, you’re not going to be interested in writing it, and that’s what I believe my weakness is in writing I don’t have enough experience yet to write about everything and anything, so I’m excited that we will be able to pick our themes so that I will be able to write more controversial and grow on my writing skills.

I’ve always written everything down on paper when possible. I prefer paper over screen any day, when writing on paper I find myself a lot more focused, I find it to be more of a distraction when typing on the computer, so it will be interesting to try and switch up my normal writing habits while attending this class.
